Do O-Level Grades Matter in 2025? What Parents and Teens Should Know

Do O Level Grades Matter in 2025

You’ll not be defined by a single set of exam papers. Still, the marks you earn at O-Level open doors…or make them a little harder to push.

Read on to learn which doors those are, what has recently changed, and practical steps to improve your options.

So, Do O-Level Grades Matter in 2025?

The short answer is, yes. O-Level grades do matter in 2025. Especially for immediate next steps such as Junior College (JC), polytechnic, or ITE placements.

They remain the primary credential used in the Joint Admissions Exercise (JAE) and by post-secondary institutions when making offers. If you want clarity on whether your grades will get you into a particular course or school, those results are still the currency.

That said, the education landscape is shifting. How grades are used, and which aggregates are important, is changing too. Knowing both the rules and the alternatives gives you a real advantage.

Which Scores Matter and Why They are Used

Admissions commonly rely on these aggregates and measures:

L1R5

This is the familiar score used for JC entries. English (L1) plus five relevant subjects (R5). Many JCs still use L1R5 as the baseline for offers.

ELR2B2

This is used by some polytechnics and courses. It combines English (EL), two relevant subjects (R2), and the next two best subjects (B2). Different courses set different minimums.

Course Minimum Entry Requirements (MERs)

Polytechnic and ITE courses publish their MERs. These are specific to the diploma or programme.

There are only a limited number of spots in each course. Aggregates provide an objective and comparable way to sort applicants. Even if you have a strong potential in an area, the conditional offers and postings are still often tied to these results.

A Quick Look at How O-Level Grades Are Calculated

The O-Level grading scale ranges from A1 to F9, with A grades being the strongest and F9 as a fail. These grades are then converted into points for admission into JCs or polytechnics.

L1R5 (for Junior College)

  • L1: English or Higher Mother Tongue
  • R5: Five relevant subjects
  • Add the point values of all six subjects. (e.g. A1 = 1 point, A2 = 2 points, B3 = 3 points, and so on)
  • Lower scores indicate stronger eligibility.

ELR2B2 (for Polytechnic)

  • EL: English
  • R2: Two relevant subjects
  • B2: The next two best subjects
  • Add the four point values to get your final score. (e.g. A1 = 1 point, A2 = 2 points, B3 = 3 points, and so on)

These aggregates determine which JC, polytechnic course, or pathway you qualify for. Even a small change in grade can shift the options available to you.

What Has Changed Lately and What to Watch For

Singapore is actively reforming secondary education in ways that directly affect O-Level relevance going forward. Here are key changes that parents and teens should be aware of:

Full Subject-Based Banding (SBB)

The old Express and Normal stream system is being replaced by full subject-based banding.

This means students can take subjects at the level that matches their strengths, rather than being locked into a stream.

It affects how students are prepared for national exams and the subjects they choose.

A Single National Exam from 2027

Starting in 2027, O-Levels and N-Levels will be replaced by a new Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) exam.

There will be one common exam period for most subjects in October, simplifying the exam timetable.

For Mother Tongue Language (MTL), students will only have one written exam sitting, eliminating the current option to retake it.

Results for the SEC will be released in January of the following year, changing the timeline compared to current O- and N-level result releases.

Admission Rules Are Evolving (From L1R5 to L1R4 in 2028)

On top of changes to how exams are taken, admission criteria such as how aggregates are calculated may also be adjusted over time.

For example, changes to JC admission calculations (L1R5) are already in discussion.

Why These Matter for 2025

These reforms suggest a more flexible future, but for students taking O-Levels in 2025, the current system still applies.

Knowing about the 2027 shift helps you plan ahead. Subject choices, preparation strategy, and long-term goals may all be affected.

How O-Level Grades Affect Each Common Pathway

You might be thinking, “Which path will these grades open?” Here’s how grades influence each major route after O-Levels.

Junior College (A-Levels)

Admission typically uses L1R5/related aggregates. Strong language and content subject grades are critical for competitive JCs.

Changing rules are on the horizon, but for now the grades you receive matter a great deal.

Polytechnic

Polytechnic admissions consider ELR2B2/L1R4 and subject MERs that vary by course. Some polytechnic courses also use interviews, portfolios, or aptitude tests for selection.

Conditional offers can be made before results (via EAE), but final posting is still dependent on O-Level results.

ITE and Other Vocational Routes

Minimum passes in English and maths plus acceptable subject passes are usually sufficient. ITE is a strong, respected route to industry skills and further progression.

Overseas or Private Pathways

Some private schools or overseas institutions will consider O-Level grades, but they may weigh other assessments or interviews. If considering this, check each institution’s entry rules carefully.
